Oregon Christian University Joins in Day of Service on MLK Day

Newberg, OR (Vocus) December 21, 2010

For a second straight year, students and staff from George Fox University will join more than 1,200 representatives from eight other colleges and universities to serve the Portland metropolitan area with acts of volunteerism on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 17, 2011.

The event begins with a rally on the campus of Portland State University at 9 a.m. Immediately following, students will board busses and head to project sites across Portland. Among those partnering with the schools are Big Brother, Big Sister, De La Salle High School, Film Action Oregon, and the Friends of Trees organization.

As the conclusion of the day, students will engage in discussion about how the day impacted their lives and what the next steps will be for student collaboration.

The aim is to make the holiday a day on, not off, where people from Portland-area college campuses unify together for the common goal of serving others and being the beloved community that Dr. King envisioned, said Shelley Yonemura, director of multicultural student programs at George Fox.

The Portland event ties into a national day of service. Initiated by Congress in 1994, King Day of Service builds on the civil rights leaders legacy by transforming the federal holiday honoring him into a national day of community service grounded in his teachings of nonviolence and social justice.

Service is nothing new at George Fox. For 12 years the university has hosted Serve Day, when it closes school for one day in early September to send students and staff members out to surrounding communities to perform various volunteer projects. On Sept. 8, 2010, about 1,500 from the university visited more than 70 sites, performing acts of service that ranged from painting and cleaning to pulling weeds and construction projects. Teams served in Yamhill, Clackamas, Washington and Multnomah counties.

George Fox University is ranked by Forbes as the top Christian college in the Pacific Northwest and among the top three Christian colleges in the country. George Fox is the only Christian university in the Pacific Northwest classified by U.S. News & World Report as a first tier national university. More than 3,400 students attend classes on the universitys campus in Newberg, Ore., and at teaching centers in Portland, Salem, and Redmond, Ore., and Boise, Idaho. George Fox offers bachelors degrees in more than 40 majors, degree-completion programs for working adults, five seminary degrees, and 11 masters and doctoral degrees.

Design & Build with FSC Awards New Energy Works First Place

Portland, OR (Vocus/PRWEB) November 18, 2010

New Energy Works Timberframers was honored last night in a special reception hosted by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in conjunction with the USGBC GreenBuild Conference in Chicago for winning first place in the 6th Annual Design & Build with FSC Award. New Energy Works Timberframers entered The Vermont Street Project, a residential home that was built with 100% Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood materials, from multiple FSC categories including reclaimed, salvaged and fresh sawn.

Andrea Carlson, Project Associate with the FSC-US stated, We were very impressed with the use of FSC wood in The Vermont Street Project and the opportunities it created to expand the FSC marketplace.

Jonathan Orpin, President/Founder of New Energy Works commented on the project, The decision to use 100% FSC fresh sawn and reclaimed wood throughout the home in structure, exteriors and interiors is based on the fact that while wood is a sustainable product, the effects of ill-managed forestry and mass consumption is devastating eco-systems in both production and waste.

FSC wood features of The Vermont Street Project include: a recycled Douglas fir timber frame; reclaimed elm and oak flooring; fresh sawn Douglas fir flooring and paneling; interior woodworking using reclaimed walnut (cabinets/interior doors), reclaimed white oak countertop, pickle vat stock (lower level doors), sinker cypress front door, reclaimed cherry custom dining table; custom furniture using various reclaimed species, solid wood framed windows; recycled redwood siding; antique barn siding; as found cedar log; and cedar decking.

Thoughtful sourcing of materials is part of our ethos and certainly was a priority when building The Vermont Street Project. While we sourced the majority of the wood from our sister company, Pioneer Millworks, we were also able to support local FSC certified producers, continued Orpin.

The award recognizes excellence in the use of FSC materials in both residential and commercial/institutional design and construction. This distinguished award honors designers and builders who are committed to using FSC-certified wood and creating a marketplace that promotes environmentally, socially and economically beneficial forest management.

New Energy Works designs and builds environmentally responsible timber frames across the USA from their New York and Oregon facilities. The company offers Timber Framing (design, engineering, manufacturing, build), Enclosure Systems, Fine Woodworking, Recycled and Sustainable wood products. New Energy Works has 2 LEED AP staff members, is a member of the US Green Building Council, and is FSC Certified in three categories.

For information visit The Vermont Street Project. Partners who collaborated on this project: Pioneer Millworks, Basco Appliance, Chown Hardware, Custom-Bilt Metals, Dimensional Millwork, Inc., ecohaus, Evolution Floors, GLD DesignStudio, Imaginenergy, Landscape East & West, Loren Nelson Photography, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Traditional Natural Plaster Company, Premier Building Systems, Shelter Works, and West Side Electric Co.
