COTA introduces The Maston riding area.
November 6, 2007Posted by Chris K. w/ COTASaturday Nov. 17th COTA will host an introduction ride in the new Maston area. What’s the Maston you ask? Well The Maston Allotment is a 4,000 plus acre chunk of BLM land included in the final stages of the new Cline Buttes Recreation Area management plan. http://www.blm.gov/or/districts/prineville/plans/clinebuttes/areadescription.php The Maston area is being considered for non-motorized multi-use recreation; to us that means a new riding area. It is roughly located off Cline Falls Hwy between the town of Tumalo and Redmond. This area is a great resource as a winter riding area perfect for those looking to explore the desert and/or maintain riding fitness. The riding is on a mix of double and singletracks through rolling juniper grassland. We hope to have Keith Brown, Recreation Planner for the BLM, with us on the 17th to better explain the current and future status of the area in regards to non-motorized recreation. This introduction ride is open to anyone. The riding at The Maston is mostly non-technical and without any major climbs. That said the trails and roads are quite primitive and can be sandy which can make the riding more physically challenging but definitely not technical. The BLM does limit any group rides on their land to less than 50 people. If you would like to join us, I must have you RSVP via email to maston@cotamtb.org. Please include the number of people you are reserving space for. And yes - you old timers of COTA - even you have to RSVP. Who: Anyone on the COTA listserve is welcome (limited to 50 riders per BLM regulations) Date and Time: 11 AM on Saturday Nov. 17th. Location: 1/2 mile West on Newcomb Rd which is approximately 4.5 miles from the town of Tumalo on the Cline Falls Hwy. Length: We will have at minimum two distinct routes to chose from. One an exploratory ride in the neighborhood of 10 miles/2 hours or so. A more complete expedition will range closer to 20 miles/approx +3 hours. (All distances and time estimates, are provided by myself and I haven’t ridden with a computer or a watch in the last 10 years - so assume I don’t really know) Hope you can join us as we push the riding season into winter. Thanks for supporting COTA. Chris Kratsch Here’s a map to the meeting point: View Larger Map
